Whenever you’re starting to learn a new language, one of the first things you usually learn is the alphabets. The same applies when you’re learning Russian. You’ll always be asked to learn Russian alphabets first so you can read before you can start speaking. Almost all the alphabets in Russian are phonetic so every sound you hear in Russian is connected to one of the letters. They do not have spelling like what English has. The word “guard” pronounced as “gard” for English.
For Russian, what you hear is what you write. For example, when you hear “gard”, you will spell it out as “gard”. This means you can literally spell out every single Russian word you hear the first time you hear it.
Russian alphabets are easy to learn when you are already familiar with English. There are 33 alphabets in Russian, which is just a little bit more than English which has 26. It can be broken down further into 4 groups:
First group consists of 5 letters that is the same with English alphabets.
Second group consist of 6 letters that is similar to Greek.
Third group has 6 letters that looks like English alphabets but with different pronunciation.
And the last group has 16 letters which is unique to the Russian language.
Mastering the Russian alphabets will not take you more than 1-2 hours of reading and practice. It may look confusing at first but that’s only because you’re not properly exposed to the characters yet. All you have to do is break it down into the 4 groups and you should be able to pick it up quite easily.
